Students plan Earth Day celebration

Southeastern Eco-Friends in conjunction with Southeastern’s Department of Foreign Languages and Communication will be hosting Earth Day Celebration 2011 on April 12 at the War Memorial Student Union.

The celebration will feature activities and displays that will teach the community about fun and easy ways to live a greener life. Organizations from the Hammond community will also be in attendance to display eco-friendly services and projects.

“This is always a great event that brings together members from the Southeastern community,” said Ashley Bolden, co-chair of Southeastern Eco-Friends. “It allows everyone to learn new things and see the benefits of having a greener lifestyle.”

Earth Day Celebration will have activities to teach the community such things as how to recycle, create solar heaters and aluminum stoves out of household products, and create eco-friendly disposables, to name a few. There will also be food, drinks, music and giveaways. One lucky person will even walk away with a brand new Apple iPod Touch.

Students will be able to drop off material at the Student Union for recycling. Waste Integration will be on site with a trailer where students can bring old appliances like refrigerators, microwaves and freezers to be recycled. There will also be a location to recycle unused cell phones and batteries.
