Tuesday. Southeastern basketball fans in attendance received free food on the behalf of courtesy of Southeastern Athletics Marketing and Promotions and also had the chance to win cash and prizes.
Lions Head Coach Jay Ladner took to the mic to welcome the crowd. The coach discussed the team’s plans for the season and their expectations from the fans.
“There’s enough to people in our student section to help us win some games,” said Ladner. “I’m promising if you all will come and we can get you to sit in those two sections, stand up and make some noise, we will win some basketball games.”
Next up on the mic was the Lady Lions Head Coach Yolanda Moore. Moore introduced her coaching staff to the crowd and addressed her hopes for the upcoming season.
“We’re very excited. We have a couple new faces on this team,” said Moore. “We are very pumped up about what’s going to happen for our program and we need all you guys to come out and support us. We need you all here and we need you all loud.”
It was time for the night’s competitions once the coaches were finished speaking to the crowd. A three-point shoot off between a member of the Lady Lions and a member of the Lions kicked off Full Court Fest. The Dunk Contest followed the three-point contest, which put four Lions against each other to see who had the best hops and style on the team. Junior forward Jordan Capps, redshirt freshman guard Dimi Cook, freshman guard Marlain Veal and freshman forward Mo Greenwood all showed off their dunking skills to the audience with Veal coming out as the dunk contest champion of the night.
A dance competition among the fans capped off the night, with the winner taking home a pair of Beats headphones. Athletes from the Lions and Lady Lions judged the volunteers as the dancers were eliminated one by one until a winner was decided.
The Lions have already started their regular season with Southeastern falling to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs. They will open up at home this week when they host Mississippi College in the University Center Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Lions fell to the Arkansas University Razorbacks in their season opener. Their home opener will be against Auburn University on November 16 at 7 p.m.
