[HAMMOND]- SLU’s Student Government Association wants students who are interested in becoming members of their organization to file for office in a few weeks. This information was noted on Monday, Jan. 23 during their first meeting.
Jasmine Jackson, Shawndreka Gatlin and Devonte’ Bryant were three out of the five members who attended the short meeting. Ms. Jackson occupies the Internal Affairs Chair position while the other two members are labeled as Senators. Jackson explained, “Every member usually attends all meetings once we resolve their schedule conflicts.” She also noted, “During SGA meetings, a thought process is conducted, resolutions for student life are discussed, as well as the 3 committees: internal affairs, appropriations, and student life.”
Mr. Bryant informed non-members about what SGA stands for. He stated, “The Student Government Association advances and improves connections between the local community of Hammond and the student body of SLU. SGA also creates programs that benefit current students, and the members devote themselves to stay alert of the general well-being of the students. SGA serves as a gateway to link communication between the student body, faculty and administration.”
Ms. Gatlin proceeded to talk about SGA grants. She said, “There are 3 types of grants: organizational, travel, and departmental- this means any department at SLU can apply for one grant up to $700.00 every year to help raise money for educational projects, programs, travel or events. This also helps students become more aware of the benefits of SGA as well as increases SLU’s reputation.” SGA held a travel and grant workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Wednesday, Jan. 25 in the Student Union Room 223.
