In an uneven season for the Lions football team, it’s been the defense that has stood out statistically the most and provided a ray of hope for Lion fans. The season hasn’t gone quite as planned for the two time reigning Southland Champions who have a record of 4-4 as almost all aspects of the team have played up and down. The defense, however has been a bright spot all season long for the Lions.
The Lions defense has been excellent statistically this season and have been in the top three defenses in the Southland Conference in many of the different categories. The defense ranks second in the conference in points given up, averaging 22.0 points per game. . Their worst outing was against a Division I team, the Ohio Bobcats who put up 35 points against the defense. The defense is also ranked second overall in the conference, second in yards given up, third in sacks, fourth in interceptions and tied for second place in defensive touchdowns.
The Lions defense has created some buzz around it, gaining praise from their coach as well as a NFL corner back. Southeastern’s head coach Ron Roberts said, “I believe that we have one of the best defenses in the conference.” Besides the team’s head coach, one former corner back from the team took notice of the Lion’s defense. Current Atlanta Falcons corner back Robert Alford, who graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University, said “The defense has looked great.” Alford contributed the defense’s success this year to the players as well as new defensive coordinator Blake Williams, saying, “Both deserve a lot of credit for what they’ve done this year, they’ve done a great job.”
Two of the biggest play makers on the defense come from the secondary, Harlan Miller and Denzel Thompson. Both corner backs have stuck out in their defense and have started to gain some attention, particularly Miller. Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan was on the sidelines of the Lions homecoming game and paid very close attention to the Lions defense. Miller, now a senior could have a chance to play in this year’s National Senior Bowl as well as being drafted into the NFL in the 2016 draft.
