The Department of Language and Communication hires Albert Martinez to help tutor students taking the foreign language.
Albert Martinez is a native Spanish speaker from Barcelona, Spain. Martinez is an International Student on scholarship for track and field and he is a junior majoring in physical therapy. Martinez came to the United States two and a half years ago speaking a decent level of English and now he is fluent.
Martinez said, “It took me about five months to become fluent. It was very difficult in the beginning in the first and second month. I had no choice than to try to learn English and they had other Spanish speakers who would help me.”
He said that without any level or knowledge of Spanish, it will take about a year and a half to become fluent.
Martinez spent two of his years in the United States in California where he attended California State Long Beach University, then he transferred to Southeastern. When Martinez was in California, he worked as a Spanish tutor for the university. When he came to Southeastern, the Department of Language and Communication reached out to him about the job because of his experience.
Martinez said he liked the job because students come in with no idea of the language and walk out with an understanding because of his help. “I like that they learned something,” said Martinez.
Martinez tutoring hours are 9 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday in D. Vickers room 211.
