Performing Arts Added To SLU Contemporary Art Gallery

The Southeastern Louisiana University Contemporary Art Gallery, located on 100 East Stadium, now includes the performing arts in its latest Faculty Art Exhibition for Spring 2017 depicted in digital form.

The work of fine and performance art faculty members Steve Shepker, Nicole Watts, and Benjamin Norman is on display in digitized format from Jan. 19 through Feb. 10 in the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery.

Located on 100 East Stadium, the SLU Contemporary Art Gallery is open from 8am to 5pm every Monday through Thursday.

Intended to display the skill and talent of the Visual Art Department’s faculty, the Faculty Art Exhibition now features the inclusion of the visual arts as a part of a new academic area of concentration. New for the Spring semester, the department now offers a bachelors degree in visual arts with a concentration in theatre design.

According to Area Head for Sculpture and Theater Design Professor Jeff Mickey, the two award-winning departments recognized the potential for a specialized concentration. “We wanted to combine the talents of our two departments and develop a concentration to blend the strengths of the Theatre Department with those of our Visual Arts Department,” Mickey said. The new concentration is designed to prepare students for careers in technical stage direction, set design, and stage costume, and is the only accredited concentration in theatre design in the State of Louisiana.

With 22 students already enrolled, the concentration will see its first graduate by the end of the Spring 2017 semester.
