While the saunas at Southeastern’s Pennington Center are most definitely hot, not so many are bothered by it.
Since its construction in 2001, the Claude B. Pennington, Jr. Student Activity Center has offered several recreational activities for its members. The center provides many amenities to increase health and fitness levels of the Southeastern community, including saunas in both the men’s and women’s locker rooms.
“More students and members use them than most would think,” said Pennington Center employee Haley Washington . “I’ve seen some people come in just for the sauna and leave if it is not working that day.”
Melissa A. Lama, nurse practitioner at Allen’s Family Practice in Ponchatoula, said she recommends saunas for detoxification and relaxation. She added that they are especially beneficial for stressed college students.
Psychology major Nicole Cousins regularly works out at the Pennington Center and is a frequent user of the sauna.
“I use it a couple of times a week. I use it to sweat out toxins and help with sore muscles post-workout,” she said.
Psychology major Michlynn Scalise said she recently started using the Pennington Center sauna.
“It is intense when you first get in the sauna, but after you feel what the heat does for your muscles, nerves, and stress, it’s all worth it,” she said.
