Mocktails brings alcohol awareness to Southeastern

Mocktails 2010, an alcohol awareness event hosted by the University Counseling Center, Office of Greek Life and PEEPS, was a big hit this year.  At around 5:30 p.m., all participants were allowed to start setting up their booths, preparing decorations and filling fancy drink cups.

Each year Southeastern invites a speaker to speak on alcohol awareness and this year they invited Erica Upshaw from Keep Friendship Alive. According to Upshaw, she lost her brother due to a drug and alcohol overdose his junior year of college. Her speech focused on how to party safe and steps on how to be able to recognize a situation before it gets out of hand.

“I was in college once too, and I know how naive it is to tell you all not to party at all,” said Upshaw.

Campus organization members along with various other students attended the speech. After Upshaw spoke, everyone attending filled the Student Union Mall to try each group’s drinks. The Mocktails themes this year was 90s cartoons, which included Gargoyles, Rugrats, Where’s Waldo, Pinky and the Brain, Dragon Ball Z, and many more.  The NAACP won first place for booth design and first place overall.
