Monday night the Department of Languages and Communication event “International Night” was held in the Student Union Ballroom from 5-7 p.m.
“International Night is a night to celebrate our international students at Southeastern and also a way to unite all cultures as one,” said Southeastern professor and organizer for the event, Dr. Aileen Mootoo.
Sisters Shreeja and Shreya Bhatt, who were born in India and are freshmen both majoring in chemistry, performed a Bollywood dance to “aaja nachle”. Shreya said, “Performing at international night was a new experience that I thoroughly enjoyed. I also had the chance to be exposed to different cultural foods and music.”
Students performed songs, dances and skits from French, Cajun French, Italian, Spanish and Chinese cultures. The event provided foods from different cultures for the guests to enjoy, ranging from enchiladas to burgundy beef with rice. Professors from the department closed the event by leading the Zumba dances.
Over 320 people attended the event. The event raised donations to create scholarships for the department’s study abroad program, said Mootoo.
The event was free and families were allowed to attend.
International Night is an annual event given by the Department of Languages and Communication for the last 16 years, according to Mootoo.
