How Homecoming Works

Southeastern’s 2015 Homecoming Week is over and so far no plans for next year has been made yet. Student Government Association (SGA) is currently in “wrap up mode”, and are still handling the final conclusions from mid-October’s events. Again, there is no official set date for when Southeastern can expect next year’s Homecoming week. However, the athletics department will provide SGA with the tentative football schedule that includes the recommended Homecoming date for 2016.

No planning for next year will take place until a new Homecoming chair of members are chosen. Before this can happen, a new SGA president must first be elected which occurs during the spring semester. Potential Homecoming chair members are required to complete an application in order to be considered for the position by the SGA Executive Cabinet. The Homecoming chair is responsible for deciding on the Homecoming week activities they want to incorporate for the student body to participate in. They must have all of their plans and ideas approved by SGA advisors before sending them to the University Homecoming Committee who reviews the overall schedule. The president of the University Homecoming Committee is the person to approve the finalized Homecoming Week schedule with all activities (including Alumni activities) before it is official and posted.

As for those who are considering running for future Homecoming King or Queen, there is also an application process as well and specific criteria that must be met. Prospective candidates have to be a full-time student and acquire at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. In addition, they must be active members of at least two on-campus organizations, and are required to attend all Homecoming Committee meetings. How a candidate chooses to verbally or socially promote themselves for votes is up to them.

After that, the election starts and the students vote for who they want to win. The seven female and seven male candidates with the most votes are the students that will be on Homecoming Court and Beau Court. The two winners are crowned at the Homecoming game during halftime.
