[Ponchatoula, La.] – A free tutoring program open to third through sixth grade students is being started by Pastor Bruce Graves of New Zion Baptist Church in Ponchatoula, La.
The program is staffed with certified teachers who volunteer twice a week and is set to open at the end of October. There is no outside funding.
Graves said, “I am especially targeting young men at Martha Vineyard who may be getting into trouble and need extra help.”
Ponchatoula school bus drivers are being asked to help guide children who may need extra help to the program.
Graves has overseen successful tutoring programs in previous years. He recognizes the community’s need for free academic tutoring and a structured afterschool environment.
Graves is reaching out to Southeastern Louisiana University education majors. He hopes some agreement with Southeastern can be worked out for possible student teaching credit for volunteering in the program.
