Hammond, LA – In order for students to be well-prepared for the Career Fair 2012 which will be held on Sept. 20, a pre-fair event demonstrating proper etiquette for Career Fair 2012 was held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 12 in Garrett Hall Room 14.
Southeastern Louisiana University holds a university-wide career fair every fall semester. A great many career opportunities are provided for students during the career fair. This year, there will be over 125 local and national companies or organizations seeking employees at the Career Fair 2012.
A pre-fair event was held in order to help students to learn how to better communicate or interact with employers, how to dress properly and how to increase their success ratio. There were also free ten-minute reviews of resumes by career counselors.
Beverly Sellers, a career counselor at the Career Service, said that hundreds of students sought her help with the career fair. The reviews of resumes mainly focus on the technical skills student presented.
“Students should highlight the most important part of their technical skills and better prove them with their experiences. Internship and volunteer experiences are very helpful for students to find a good job,” Beverly Sellers said.
Yuqiu Xie is a Master student in College of Business who will graduate next spring semester. She attended the pre-fair event and intended to find someone who could make some suggestions about her resume. She said, “I want to adjust my resume to be more professional.”
Yuqiu also would like to get some information about these employers and what kind of positions they are providing. Her interests lie in accounting and finance.
“The career counselor is so kind. Weaknesses of my resume were pointed out and suggestions were given,” Yuqiu said after meeting with a counselor. She was also told that each student could contact these career counselors at any time.
